Brown Sugar Cookies – Why You Will Love Them

Super easy to make – with a few ingredients, you can make them at a minute’s notice.

Staple ingredients can be found in your pantry – no need for an extra trip to the store.

An all-year-round cookie – change the decorator sugar and shape so you can have a fun new cookie for any occasion.

Aside from the decorator sugar, I am sure all the ingredients are in your pantry and ready to be used to create those incredible cookies.

Make sure that your butter and your egg are at room temperature. This step will save time, and both ingredients will perform better.

Ingredients needed to create those beautiful cookies

Unsalted butter – I always use unsalted butter in my cooking or baking to control the amount of sodium. Salted butter not only adds too much salt to your dish, but it changes the flavor.

Dark brown sugar – the star of this recipe. Ensure that it is firmly packed in your measuring cup.

Large egg – the binding ingredient to keep your cookies soft and not to flake apart.

Vanilla extract – flavor and more flavor added to your cookies.

All-purpose flour – make sure that is chemical-free and unbleached.

Baking soda and salt – the rising agents, as I call them.

Decorator sugar crystals – fun to play with colors of the season.

Wax paperyour cookie dough will be sticky because of the butter. The wax paper will prevent it from sticking to your board or table, making it easy to collect and place them on the baking sheet.

Rolling pin – to spread out your cookies to the same height.

Cookie cutters – choose your favorite shapes and have fun

Baking sheet – to bake your cookies on

Wire rack – used to cool your cookies. The rack will allow air to circulate your cookies, cooling them off quickly and more evenly.

Baking tips and step-by-step instructions on how to make these brown sugar cookies

This recipe is straightforward; once you have all your ingredients gathered, it will take no time to make it.

Start by preheating your over to 350F.

  • With your hand-held mixer or stand-alone KitchenAid, cream the butter. Add the brown sugar and continue beating until it is a smooth, creamy batter.
  • Add the egg and vanilla extract and continue mixing.
  • Add slowly; you do not want to splatter the flour with baking soda and salt all over your counter.
  • Place a sheet of wax paper on your counter and spread your brown sugar dough over it. Cover with the second sheet and gently with your rolling pin, even the dough.
  • With the help of your cookie cutters, cut out some shapes and place them on the baking sheet. No butter is needed on the sheet, as the cookies have plenty.
  • Bake until golden.

Cool off on a cooling rack and serve with your favorite hot drink or alone.

Storing instructions

After completely cooling your cookies, you can store them in an airtight glass container in the refrigerator for several days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add molasses to light brown sugar?

Yes, you can. If your recipe requires dark brown sugar and you only have light brown, add one tablespoon of molasses to one cup of light brown sugar. Mix well with a fork and keep in an airtight container.

Why can’t I use melted butter instead of softened?

Softened butter and melted butter are not the same. Melted butter will change the texture of anything that you will be baking.

Should I use baking powder or baking soda for cookies?

Baking soda is about three times stronger than baking powder, so adjust the recipe accordingly. Baking soda and baking powder can produce cookies with different textures.
